Technology
For primary communication, we utilize the WeChat group chat. Join this group by scanning the QR code in the lecture slides. Participation in question-asking, resource-sharing, and course-topic discussions is highly encouraged within the WeChat group. However, sharing homework solutions or discussing specific solutions is prohibited.
Canvas
Homework submissions and grade reporting will occur via Canvas. Access lecture videos on the Canvas platform. Regularly check Canvas for new announcements and updates. The Canvas discussion board is a recommended forum for general inquiries about the course, homework, and projects.
Homework
This course comprises four homework assignments, issued approximately every four weeks. All homework resources are available on Canvas, where grades will also be posted. Completing homework and reviewing solutions is vital for your learning process. It is expected that you demonstrate your work and justify your answers.
Grading
Student assessment will be derived from the following distribution: 60% from homework grades and 40% from the final project. The final project, spanning four weeks, offers students experience in open-ended data science analysis and general research. Groups of 2-3 students will undertake the project. Grading criteria for the project include: 1) project novelty, 2) technical complexity, 3) quality of the written report, and 4) quality of the project presentation.
Academic Integrity
Cheating
Ethical conduct is paramount in engineering. Acting ethically and honestly is not just a responsibility but also essential for maximizing learning. Cheating, inherently dishonest and antisocial, is unacceptable. Any violation will result in negative points in the relevant category, potentially unlimited, and a referral to the Center for Student Conduct.
It is prohibited to upload any course materials, including problems, solutions, or your solutions, to publicly accessible sites. Use WeChat or Canvas for content discussions. The only exceptions are communications with collaborators explicitly named in your homework. Accessing solutions from previous semesters, from other students, or sharing your solutions is forbidden. Moreover, students must immediately report any suspected cheating or unauthorized communication to the course staff. Failure to do so implicates the bystander, as it constitutes academic misconduct. Cheating degrades the integrity of everyone, and engineering ethics require us to confront wrongdoing.
Collaboration
Collaboration on homework is encouraged, but should be confined to high-level discussions. Coding must be done individually, and specific discussions of solutions or code sharing are prohibited. While books and online resources can help solve homework problems, you must cite all such sources and refrain from copying material directly. Acknowledge all individuals who have assisted you or contributed significant ideas to your homework.
